From the moment Jay-Z released his cryptic 4:44 ad in Times Square I’ve been intrigued. And when we knew it was an album my interest was heightened well above normal levels. I was oh so curious to see how this would turn out knowing how Jay-Z has not really been at the tippy top of his game as of late. And that is not throwing shade at all, this man is popping out his 13th album and he is still dropping lines and teaching lessons that people will dissect for years. And with saying that I love how Hov did everything on this album. In all honesty I dont know if this will be his last studio album but with my college educated brain I can only assume that this might be it. He’s had such a long, prosperous career and obviously doesn’t even need to make music anymore first off. He’s not a businessman, he’s a business man. And second off, the way this album sounds makes it seem like it his last hoorah. He addresses a bunch of stuff on 4:44 and really just puts everything he has on the table so i really dont know what else he could rap about. He hits on personal, cultural and political issues like talking about how his mother was forced to hide in the closet as a lesbian for some many years for the fear of what might happen. He hits on all the media and rumors about his marriage and potentially mistresses and the elevator scuffle with Beyonce’s sister. He throws shots at himself, he throws shot at Kanye, He throws shots at Eric Benet. He hits racial issues and even manages to bring OJ’s name back into the light. He ends it all with a song called “Legacy” and it tells of the story of leaving your legacy and acts as an ode to his children I believe and his empire that he has built for them.
The beats behind Jay’s flow are out of this world, mixing samples in with classic drum flows, No ID absolutely murdered this album. And to do it all alone is just phenomenal and really proves to anyone that can’t already see how talented No ID is and how he will go down as one of the best producers in the rap game history books. I think Jay-Z was trying to make a statement with this album and he did just that. In this world we live in of Migos and mumble rapping, it is honestly just so refreshing to hear a classic Hov come on a beat and just be spitting clean crisp bars. He changes up his flow a few times on this album which I really liked and on “Bam” he hits on with a killer drop and roll into his verse. I knew this was coming so I was sure to sign up for the Tidal free trial earlier in the day before 4:44 came out and I could not be happier that I got in and was able to listen. It blows my mind and I keep forgetting that there is a majority of people out there who have never heard this album. And a lot of them might not depending on how it will be released or if it will be on tidal alone forever. who knows. All i know is if that the case I am gonna end of buying a Tidal subscription cause this shit is an album all be bumping all summer17 and beyond. #444 -( . )
Eminem has worked his entire life for this moment. He has officially had a word entered in the Oxford dictionary because of a song he wrote. “Stan”, from his song “Stan”, about an obsessed fan named Stan has been given an exact definition and solidified in the ink of the dictionary. Now I’m gonna be honest, I’ve never actually said this or even had it said to me so maybe bigger cities use it more but this came way out of left field for me. Now that I’m aware doe….imma be a stan of everything I used to be a fan for. I stan for the Packers (Go Pack Go), I stan for water, fuck being a fan, thats pussy shit. Through his entire career, Eminem has won numerous Grammys, Globes, academys, blowjobs, etc but I truly think that this is what he has been aiming for his entire career. Its no secret that he used to just read the dictionary as a young wanna-be rapper to expand his vocabulary and while reading that dictionary he probably made a mission for himself to someday be in the very book he is reading. And now he’s done it, King Em, all hail. So now that this is actually a word I am all in on it and you should be too.
Be a stan, not a fan. -( . )
Billboard– Over the past week, Lil Yachty’s debut album Teenage Emotions has garnered a lot of attention. After blaming his A&R for allowing him to keep his cello line in “Peek A Boo”, the 19-year-old admitted to lying about the lyric during an interview with Hot 97. “No, I actually thought it was a woodwind instrument,” Yachty told the morning crew. The debacle stemmed from Twitter calling out the Yachty lyric — “My new b—h yellow/ she blow that d–k like a cello” — as the cello is a stringed instrument that can’t be, well, blown.
Yachty also addressed the slip-up during an interview with Genius last week. “OK, let’s stop for a second. Before you come at me, I’ma let you know. I’ma blame my A&R. Because he listened to that song many times and he allowed me to say that. I guess for a second I thought a cello was a woodwind instrument and it is not. And nobody ever said shit. … Nobody ever pulled up a pic and said, “Hey man. I don’t know if you know what this is, but it ain’t that.” … I f–ked up. I thought Squidward played the cello. He don’t. That’s a flute. I f–ked up.” (For the record: Squidward plays the clarinet.)
This dude is as real as it fuckin gets. He drops a line in his song about gettin blown like a cello thinking that the cello was a woodwind instrument. I’m admittedly on the Yachty Yacht right now cause I love what he’s pumping out and the vibes he throws out with just being happy and doing what he loves. So he didn’t know what a cello was, he’s not a fuckin music teacher, he’s a rapper and on top of that he openly owns not knowing what a cello is. Take me as I am he’s screaming, he’s not trying to front and make up some bullshit for the lyric because he is just young as hell and learning, along with everyone else, as he stumbles through life. One of his boys kinda dropped the ball maybe as they could have been like, “yo whats that line all about?” and then explained to him what a cello actually is but I can see his A&R just staying out of it and not wanting to question his artists work.
Props times a hundred for doubling down and dropping the Squidward reference. I am dying laughing trying to imagine myself watching Spongebob all those years and not knowing that Squidward is playing the flute. Thinking he’s playing a cello and taking that as a fact. Fuck maybe we should just change the name and make a cello the woodwind instrument formally known as the flute. Anything for Yatchy. Whatever man, this song has millions and millions of views and listens so who gives a fuck if he wasn’t completely literal with one of his lyrics, it wouldn’t be the first time in rap history. Still plays. -( . )
